May was a month of momentum—bringing with it recognition, new leadership, and exciting progress at the intersection of supercomputing and science. From quantum breakthroughs to thought leadership and strategic recruitment, Pawsey continues to help shape Australia’s computational future.
A major highlight this month: Qbit Bridge, our pioneering hybrid workflow combining classical and quantum computing, has been named a finalist in the2025 INCITE Awards. This achievement places Pawsey among a remarkable group of WA innovators, and reinforces our mission to make quantum technology usable, scalable, and accessible for real-world research.
We also share the continued thought leadership of our CEO, Mark Stickells AM, who published his latest insight in The Evolution of Resolution: Driving Scientific Discovery Across Scales. Published on LinkedIn, the piece explores how advances in computational resolution—from climate science to astronomy—are pushing the boundaries of discovery.
As part of our growth, we are currently recruiting a Chief Operating Officer to help lead the next phase of Pawsey’s journey—strengthening national capabilities and ensuring long-term impact for the research community.
And in a significant transition for our local ecosystem, we bid farewell toProf Peter Klinken, Western Australia’s longest-serving Chief Scientist, and warmly welcome Prof Sharath Sriram into the role. We look forward to working together to advance WA’s position as a hub of scientific excellence.

Nextflow for Life Sciences Workshop

Pawsey is proud to be a satellite venue for the upcoming Nextflow for the life sciences workshop, coordinated by Australian BioCommons in collaboration with the National Bioinformatics Training Cooperative.
Designed for life science researchers, this hands-on workshop will guide participants in building reproducible and scalable scientific workflows using Nextflow. Led by Fred Jaya and Michael Geaghan from the Sydney Informatics Hub, training will be delivered via Zoom with on-site support at each location by experienced facilitators.
Whether you are new to Nextflow or ready to deepen your skills, this workshop is a fantastic opportunity to connect, learn, and apply workflow development techniques in a supported, collaborative environment.

CSC/Pawsey GPU Hackathon
Australian researchers and developers are invited to join the upcoming GPU Hackathon, which Pawsey is co-organising with CSC in Finland. This is a hands-on coding event designed for small developer teams working to port, extend, or optimise applications on AMD or NVIDIA GPUs using systems such as Setonix, LUMI, or the upcoming Roihu.
Whether your team is moving a CPU-only application to GPUs or optimising GPU code across platforms, this is a unique opportunity to work alongside world-leading experts from AMD, HPE, NVIDIA, CSC and Pawsey.
Who Can Apply?
Teams must be eligible to access systems at Pawsey, CSC, or within the EuroHPC/LUMI consortium. Australian teams or collaborations between Australian and European institutions are especially encouraged to apply.

AI for Child Wellbeing – Watch How Pawsey is Powering Medical Breakthroughs
We are proud to support groundbreaking research at Perth Children’s Hospital, where a research team is using AI and large language models to improve outcomes for children undergoing surgery.
In this video case study, researchers explain how they are extracting insights from medical records to predict complications, detect adverse events, and communicate procedures to young patients in more child-friendly ways. Pawsey’s powerful supercomputer, Setonix, alongside their onsite compute cluster, MERLIN, plays a vital role in enabling this advanced analysis.
Congratulations to Dr Harry Smallbone, Dr Thomas Drake-Brockman, Prof Britta von Ungern-Sternberg and Shaun O’Neil from the Child and Adolescent Health Service, who have been named finalists in the 2025 INCITE Awards – Innovating Government category – for their work on MERLIN, a secure AI-powered platform transforming paediatric healthcare.
