Welcome to our May newsletter.
April was a month of strategic engagement, powerful conversations, and community connection. From national research infrastructure discussions to high-level university collaborations, we continued to strengthen the foundations of future-focused science.
A standout highlight was AI & Supercomputing: Transforming Healthcare in Australia — an inspiring event that brought together researchers, clinicians, and technologists to explore the critical intersection of AI, HPC, and health innovation. We were also delighted to welcome Professor Andrew Rohl, newly appointed Interim Director of the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), on his first visit to Pawsey in the role. His visit reinforced the importance of continued collaboration between Australia’s two national supercomputing facilities.

Uptake Projects Driving Research Impact
Last year's Uptake Projects transformed research across Australia, delivering 3Ă— faster physics simulations, optimised climate workflows, and GPU-accelerated genomics.
From UNSW to UWA, 15 research teams nationwide collaborated with Pawsey experts to maximise Setonix's supercomputer capabilities.

Researchers — want to advance your work and mentor emerging talent? Submit a project for the 2025/2026 Pawsey Summer Internship Program. Projects are co-funded, with a minimum $6300 contribution per intern from the research team. Pawsey matches the funding to support student stipends, training, and infrastructure access.
All domains are welcome — from AI to bioinformatics and quantum to climate science.

Remote VR Training Session
Join us for a free, hands-on Remote VR Training session on Monday 19 May at 10:00am AWST. Discover how to visualise complex data remotely using VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3, and learn how to apply for access to Pawsey’s remote VR services. Perth-based researchers can also take advantage of our VR Headset Loan Program following the session.
Join us at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre for an interactive workshop exploring how high-performance computing is accelerating bioinformatics research across WA. Learn how supercomputing is driving real-world discoveries in genomics and transcriptomics, take part in a panel discussion, and get hands-on with Pawsey’s Fast Track allocation Scheme—no technical experience needed! With the global rise in antibiotic-resistant infections, researchers are turning to bacteriophages—viruses that target bacteria—as a powerful alternative. In a recent international collaboration, researchers led by Flinders University launched Sphae, an open-source toolkit designed to rapidly evaluate phage suitability for personalised therapies.
The development of Sphae was made possible by Australia’s national digital research infrastructure—ARDC, NCI, and Pawsey—enabling scalable bioinformatics on real-world, high-performance systems. Dr Michael Roach, featured in our new video, shares how supercomputing was essential to handling petabytes of metagenomic data.
